About Dr. Dobson

Dr. Dobson grew up near Grove City, Ohio and was inspired to enter the medical field by his uncle, Dr. M.E. Smith, and aunt, Dr. Margaret Booth, who were both family practitioners.

Dr. Dobson received his Bachelor of Arts and Doctor of Medicine degrees from The Ohio State University.  He then completed a residency in Orthopedic Surgery at The University of Toledo, and was certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1987.

From 1984 to 2016 Dr. Dobson maintained a private practice in Springfield, Ohio, with a branch office in Urbana.  In February 2016 he closed his Springfield office to join the staff of Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, where he practiced four additional years.  Although his practice was always in general orthopedics, over the years he developed a special interest and considerable experience in arthroscopy and joint replacement.  He also performed many other orthopedic procedures, including rotator cuff repair and carpal tunnel release.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Dobson performed over 20,000 surgeries, including 3500 arthroscopic procedures and 2000 hip and knee replacements.  He was not affiliated with a training program, and undertook all his surgeries personally.

Throughout his career, Dr. Dobson recognized that many patients could benefit from non-surgical therapies, and he often recommended life style changes, physical therapy, prescription or non-prescription drugs, joint injections, and other treatments.  He continues to promote a healthy lifestyle in his personal life and interactions with others.

Dr. Dobson has long enjoyed photography and disc golf, and now that he's retired, he especially likes to travel to take advantage of new photographic opportunities.
